Time Honored Tradition

Years ago in Paris, several waiters got together to race through the streets and bring attention to their profession. Today, the 'Waiters' Race' has become a time honored tradition and races are held throughout the world as a way to celebrate the restaurant business.

Charlottesville boasts over 450 restaurants. As a major culinary center along the East Coast, our First Annual Waiters Race in 2016 is sure to make history.... In honor of the first French racing waiters, we are holding our race on July 14th, Bastille Day.

How it works

Waiters gather on Charlottesville's downtown mall. First, they compete with "Tray Tricks."  Then, they race.

During the race, competitors complete the race route in their restaurant uniform. They carry a tray with one bottle and two glasses filled with liquid. They must pass through two ominous obstacles: The Water Refill and The Weeds. When they cross the finish line, there must be a specified amount of liquid remaining in both their glasses.

Spectators are welcome to gather along the route, or at one of the open restaurant patios to cheer on the racers.

Prizes

To participate, each competing waiter submits a donated gift certificate from their respective restaurants. The gift certificates are arranged from highest value to lowest value, and as the waiters cross the finish line, the gift cards are handed out as prizes. The highest value cards go to the first racers across the line and the lowest value cards go to the last racers across the line.

In addition to the 'industry glory' that is sure to follow a win, there are also special Grand Prizes for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place of Race winners. The Tray Tricks winner will also receive a Grand Prize.

A Restaurant 'Team Spirit' award will be awarded to the restaurant crew that shows the most team spirit for their competitors along the race route.
